Daily 10-Minute Writing Challenge for 2025

This has been a solid year for my writing practice — I wrote about 80,000 words of new prose, almost half of which was on new stories. More importantly, I got in the habit of submitting, and hey look at that I got two short stories accepted in pro markets woo!

Buuuuut (and?) my main focus in 2025 is lowering my resistance to writing words that may be crappy. For me, perfectionism leads to not writing at all.

So here are my official writing resolutions for 2025 … drumroll …

  1. Write for at least 10 minutes every single day

That’s it, just one resolution!

I’ve pre-loaded 10-minute exercises for every day in January 2025, and I’ll post here for accountability. If this sounds like fun to you too, hi nice to meet you let’s go! Come back here starting January 1st to write along with me.

I’ve got exercises queued up to work on first lines / beginnings, borrowed forms (like a short story in the form of horoscopes or Yelp reviews), some prompts inspired by Japanese literature, and a few adapted prompts from The 3am Epiphany by Brian Kitely.

This way, if I hit a wall on writing for publication, I’ll have something queued up and ready that is low-stakes, developmental, and hopefully fun. And even if ten minutes doesn’t unblock the “useful” writing, I’ll have done something constructive for the day.

Here’s what the first month will look like:

See you in 2025!

  1. […] My personal plan is to do the exercises live as I’m recording the episodes, so that’s a few days in advance. Knocked out three test episodes last night and I think it’s doable and sustainable. This way I’ll achieve my goal of developing my craft + getting more comfortable writing on demand, generating words that are not aimed at publication — AND — every day I’ll listen back to the ep that just released that day, and either use the time for a new round on the exercise or about a page on a WIP, depending on how I’m feeling. Thus sticking to my official resolution. […]
