February Writing Exercises: Love, Dialogue, and Comedy

Hello hello hello, welcome to MONTH TWO of the 2025 daily writing challenge at And Now We Write. This February we’ll have brand new themes, brand new writing exercises, and a brand new Flash Week event coming up Feburary 17th – 23rd.

First things first … new themes! Since February is a short month, and we’re spending a whole week on a flash fiction challenge, there are only three distinct themes for February’s standalone exercises:

  1. In honor of Valentine’s Day in the US, we’ll write about love. Not just romantic love! All the flavors that can bring us joy (and pain).
  2. We will adapt some exercises from Gene Perret’s Comedy Writing Step By Step.
  3. Finally, we will practice and develop our skills writing dialogue.

We will also host a One-Week Story Circle Flash Fiction Challenge from 2/17/25 – 2/23/25. We’ll use Dan Harmon’s story circle framework to structure the story. If writing a complete draft of a flash fiction story in just ten minutes a day sounds good and you just can’t wait, check out our January challenge and just …. do it now!

Maybe you’ve been writing along since January 1 — if so, I hope you’ll come along for another month. Check out the podcast if you haven’t already!

If you’re just finding this now, jump in, the water’s fine! If you can find ten minutes a day, you can write.
