This month, we’ve tried a handful of prompts from The 3am Epiphany by Brian Kitely, a book of over 200 writing exercises. This is the last one we’ll be doing together this month. If you’ve been having a good time with these, or if they’ve been hard but constructive, I encourage you to grab a copy and try some others yourself.
Today’s ten-minute writing exercise is a modified and simplified version of #39, Letters from Inside the Story:
Have one character from a work in progress or a story you know well write a letter to another character in the same story. The character writing the letter will not send it.
Our themes this month are:
- First lines and beginnings
- The 3am Epiphany by Brian Kitely
- Sparks from Japanese literature
- Borrowed forms
We also wrote a complete work of flash fiction together the week of Monday, January 20 – Sunday, January 26.
We’ll do this all again in February with a new set of themes and a one-week flash fiction interlude starting February 17. See you tomorrow for a new day of writing!
